On Napping

Napping is one of the most beautiful, self-compassionate, restorative gifts we can give ourselves.

It took me 29 years to learn to nap, but now, if possible, I allow myself to nap whenever and wherever I need to.

Love your body it carries you everywhere, love your mind, it thinks all your thoughts, and listen when they tell you “I need a rest”.

Give them the reward they deserve for working so hard for you all the rest of the time.

Now that I’m a regular napper, I honestly don’t know how I ever survived without it. It’s truly a gift. When the world gets too much, and my head’s in a whirl I curl up, close my eyes, count my breaths in and out 1-10 and then starting again at 1 and before I know it, I’m waking up feeling at peace and refreshed.

And to anyone out there thinking “but I just CANT nap”. I get you, honestly that was me for 29 years, but somehow I learnt the art of the nap and I’ve never looked back. I used to believe in “powering through” but now, I’m a true convert to the power of the nap!!

I’d like to share with you this excellent article from the mighty on napping!! And this photo montage of me, taking a much needed nap following a group therapy session, which I attended despite having a raging kidney infection, and fell asleep after, due to the unexpectedly strong side effects of the pain medication I had taken. I was very kindly allowed to continue to nap in the group room until I felt well enough to drive home. What could be more compassionate than that?
